Get Ready To Post Those Scores!

If all goes according to plan (and Mother Nature) we are hopefully just a little over 2 weeks away from Opening Day! No doubt most of us are gearing up for another great golf season, getting our equipment play-ready and preparing to leave winter activities behind…

In our last newsletter, we encouraged everyone to post every score, every time. Every round that produces an “acceptable score” should be posted to your scoring and handicap record. Here is a refresher on types of scores and which type to post.

Gross Score – every stroke you take - including penalties - from tee to cup.

Net Score – your total Net score is your full Gross score less your Course Handicap for the tees played. Your "hole-by-hole" Net score is your Gross score by hole, LESS any handicap stokes received for that hole (as outlined on the Stroke Index Allocation for the course and found on the scorecard.)

Maximum Adjusted Score – defined as Net Double Bogey, your Maximum Adjusted Score is calculated as “Par + 2 + Handicap Strokes received (again, as listed hole by hole using the SIA of the course.) Click for full details on Net Double Bogey.

What score should you post?

Please post your Gross Score (hole-by-hole) only.

The Score Centre program will automatically calculate your Maximum Adjusted Score and will use that value to update your handicap.

Why is this important?

Gross scores more accurately define a player's demonstrated ability.

Gross score data can also be used to provide information on average "strokes-to-par" and used in combined course performance assessments.

Gross scores - and not those manually adjusted for the Maximum Adjusted Score - are used in all competitions and in the calculation of Net scores for some competitions. Indeed, applying a NET calculation to an already adjusted score is “double-dipping” and produces an invalid score (not to mention being unfair to other players!).

So please post your Gross score for all rounds that produce an “acceptable” score.

And just as importantly, Gross scores are to be submitted on your scorecard for all competitions – even fun league games where a Gross or Net ranking or prize is allocated.

Click for more information on How To Post Your Score.

Remember - the active season for Ontario starts April 15. Please post all acceptable scores from rounds played from April 15 and forward.

Stay tuned for important information coming in April about Handicap and Score Posting Reviews.
